Group counseling

You are not the only one carrying this

Small, facilitated groups where nothing has to be explained from scratch: adult groups for anxiety, trauma and life transitions, and social skills groups for kids, pre-teens and teens, each grouped by age.

90 minutes, $60 per session. With Hannah Sharp, LMSW.

Refuge Counseling Center offers a sliding scale. Ask about it on the consult call.

Does this sound like you?

Group counseling is for people who are tired of feeling like the only one, and want to work on this alongside others who get it.

  • Alone with it

You have people in your life, but no one you can say the hard part out loud to without managing their reaction.

  • Fine on paper

You function, you show up, you hold it together, and it costs more every week than anyone can see.

  • Ready for practice

You have done the individual work. Now you want somewhere to actually practice being honest with other people.

  • A kid who needs practice

Your child or teen wants friends and does not know how to get there: reading the room, joining in, keeping a conversation going.

A room that feels safe

Groups only work when people feel safe enough to be honest, so we build that first and protect it throughout.

  • Meet one on one before you join, so you know what you are walking into.
  • Clear agreements on confidentiality, participation, and what stays in the room.
  • Share at your own pace. Listening is participating, and no one is put on the spot.

Learn from other people's honesty

Something shifts when you hear your own experience described by someone else. Insight lands differently coming from a peer than from a therapist.

  • Recognize your patterns faster when you see them from the outside.
  • Get perspectives that individual therapy cannot give you.
  • Give support as well as receive it, which changes how you see yourself.

Practice it here, use it out there

Group is a place to try new responses with real people, before the stakes are high.

  • Set a boundary, say the uncomfortable thing, ask for what you need, and see what happens.
  • Learn regulation and coping skills, then practice them while you are actually activated.
  • Take the changes into your life outside the group, one week at a time.

Social skills groups for kids, pre-teens and teens

Hannah runs small groups for younger clients, grouped by age so a nine-year-old is not practicing alongside a sixteen-year-old. The skills are concrete and the practice is live.

  • Reading faces and tone, joining a conversation, and keeping it going.
  • Handling teasing, losing, and the moments that usually end in a meltdown or a shutdown.
  • Making and keeping friends, with coaching in the moment rather than advice after the fact.
  • Parents hear what was practiced each week, so it carries into school and home.

How we work together

  1. The first call

A short conversation about what you are looking for and which group might fit.

  2. Your intake

We meet individually to talk through your history, goals, and any concerns about being in a group.

  3. Joining the group

You start with the group agreements and a clear sense of the structure, so the first session is not a surprise.

  4. The work

We meet weekly, build trust over time, and keep checking that the group is still serving what you came for.

Questions about group counseling

Ask something else

Which group is right for my child?

Groups are split by age: kids, pre-teens and teens. We meet individually first so I can place your child with peers at a similar stage, and we talk about what you are hoping they get from it.

How big are the groups?

Small enough that everyone gets heard every week. Reach out and I will tell you what is forming now and when the next one starts.
