EMDR therapy for trauma and anxiety

Process what happened, so it stops running the present

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) helps your brain finish processing painful memories. You do not have to retell every detail to get relief.

60 minutes, $180 per session. With Hannah Sharp, LMSW.

Refuge Counseling Center offers a sliding scale. Ask about it on the consult call.

Does this sound like you?

EMDR is for people who have done the talking and still feel the past in their body.

  • Stuck on alert

Your body reacts before you can think. Small triggers set off a response that does not match the moment.

  • Talked it through

You understand your history intellectually, but knowing why has not changed how it feels.

  • One bad memory

A single event keeps intruding, and you have organized your life around avoiding the reminders.

Build stability first

Before we touch a memory, we make sure you have reliable ways to come back down.

  • Map your history and what you want to target, at a pace you set.
  • Learn grounding and containment skills you can use between sessions.
  • Make sure your nervous system has enough footing to do the work safely.

Reprocess the memory

We use bilateral stimulation while you hold the memory in mind, and let your brain do what it could not do at the time.

  • Target the image, belief and body sensation the memory still carries.
  • Follow eye movements, taps or tones while the memory moves and changes.
  • Stay in the present the whole time. You remain in control and can stop at any point.

Install what you want to carry

The memory stays. What changes is the charge it holds and the belief it left behind.

  • Replace "I am not safe" or "It was my fault" with something you actually believe.
  • Clear the leftover tension your body has been holding.
  • Test the triggers that used to hook you and check what is still there.
