Welcome to Notes on healing
Why I started this blog, what you will find here, and how to reach me if you are thinking about therapy.
Hi, I’m Hannah. Welcome to Notes on healing, the blog of Refuge Counseling Center.
I am a trauma therapist in Livonia, Michigan, and I work with people from age 6 through adulthood on trauma, anxiety and life transitions. I see clients in person in Livonia and online across Michigan and Illinois. A lot of that work is EMDR, and a lot of it happens with Ada, my therapy dog, close by.

Why a blog
Therapy happens in an hour a week. Healing happens in all the hours in between: in the car after a hard session, at 2 a.m. when your mind will not settle, in the moment a memory shows up uninvited. I wanted a place for the things I find myself explaining again and again, so you can come back to them whenever you need them.
What you will find here
- Plain explanations of how trauma and anxiety show up in the body and the nervous system.
- What EMDR is, what a session looks like, and what it does not ask of you.
- Small, practical things to try between sessions.
- Now and then, news from the practice, and probably a few words about Ada.
None of it replaces therapy, and none of it is advice for your situation. Think of it as notes from the room.
If you are thinking about therapy
You do not have to know exactly what is wrong, or explain all of it, to reach out. A free 15-minute consult call is a low-pressure way to ask your questions and see whether we are a good fit. Send me a message with a few times that suit you, or call, and I will get back to you.
If you are in crisis, please do not wait for a reply. Call 911, or call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at any hour.
Thank you for being here.
Hannah
